Today we took a boat trip out to the man-made floating Uros islands on Lake Titicaca. The islands are made from layers of reeds, placed on large sections of anchored reed roots. Some can be quite big (there s a school on one) and some support only a few families. Whilst the islands have been inhabited since Incan times, most Indians living there today do so only because of the tourist trade and the money it brings. Further around the coast there are still groups of Indians living in the traditional manner, but special permits are required to visit here.
The reed beds stretch for hectares
