(Shelagh writes)Took an early morning boat trip on lake Titicaca to Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun). Actually more like a SLOW boat trip, about 2 hours - it would have taken about 20 mins in the whale watching boat! The island is 9 km long by 6 km wide and was (still is) considered a sacred place where the sun and moon were created. The Inca's also claimed their people descended from here.
We got off the boat at the northern point, Challapampa, and walked the length of the island to Yumani in the south where we caught the boat back. The walk took about 4 hours and whilst the sun was very hot there was a lovely breeze to keep us cool. The scenery was beautiful...
There were plenty of up and down hills which was more challenging than normal given we were at about 4,000m
The hillside in the background is all terraced - quinoa and potatoes crops, also some pigs roaming free at lower levels...
Quinoa stems drying in the sun.
We stopped off for a picnic lunch and enjoyed the view...
The kids did really well but were pretty tired by the time we got to the end!
Everything arrived at the island by boat and had to be taken up the hill by donkey...it looked like hot, hard work...
Islanders collected their deliveries off the boat and sat waiting for the donkeys. The island is completely car free, and much to our delight, almost litter free!
