After flying to Manta on the west coast of Ecuador, we took a taxi down to a small lodge outside of Puerto Cayo. The lodge is right on the beach and the noise of the waves rolling in from afar means you have to raise your voice to be heard outside. It is nice and warm on the coast - mid 20's, but mostly overcast today.
The beach is full of ghost crabs, popping out of their holes in the sand, only to dive back in if you approach with a camera....typico! Plenty of pelicans( above), black vultures and frigate birds here too. The kids have spent hours today just mucking about on the beach, collecting shells and playing in the waves. Perfecto.
We walked a couple of miles along the beach into Puerto Cayo - nobody else in sight. It is a small, unremarkable, village with a dirt road and one horse (:-)). We ate lunch (fish of course) in a small beach shack, bought some water and a coconut ice lolly from a friendly lady in a little store, then caught a 'tuk tuk' back - it was the first time L & L had been in one. They were grinning almost as much as the poor engine was groaning with our combined weight. I had never seen a 4 seater before.
Local kids playing on the boats.
Lunch at the cafe - that's a truck parked in behind us
It was nice to note the lack of graffiti here, unlike in Quito. Diesel was a whole cent cheaper too.... Only 1$ & 3 cents a gallon!
